EdTech: The Flipped Classroom
Homework traditionally follows classwork: a teacher introduces the subject matter then homework reinforces the learning.
Now that facts and information are just a quick search away, learners need to know more than ever how to evaluate, understand and apply information.
Flipped learning reverses the traditional order so that time out of class is used to acquire knowledge and activity in class is directed to understanding and extending it, exploring the issues, difficulties and applications.
This module looks at how best to make use of this in our professional practice with learners.
Aim
This module will help you to incorporate the flipped classroom approach into your teaching practice.
Objective
After completing this module, you will be able to:
- Select appropriate digital tools to support a flipped classroom
- Identify areas of the curriculum where a flipped classroom approach could improve the learner experience
- ritically assess the value of the flipped classroom approach
Digital Teaching Professional Framework
This module covers the EdTech component - B2 : Teaching context: face-to-face
- Use learning environment technologies to support teaching, e.g. electronic whiteboards, mobile devices.
- Structure sessions so that different (practitioner-led and learner-led) digital activities jointly reinforce the learning objective.
- Structure and manage content, collaboration and interaction in a digital environment.
- Consider how practitioner-led digital interventions can best support the learning objective.
- Reflect on the effectiveness and appropriateness of the digital teaching strategies chosen and flexibly adjust methods and strategies.
- Experiment with and develop new formats and teaching methods (e.g. flipped classroom).

Taking note of your feedback
We greatly appreciate the time taken to provide us with feedback on each module. We regularly review all the feedback provided and use it to inform the development of new modules. Subject to funds being available and other constraints, we will amend existing modules where feedback shows this is required.Feedback from other members about this module
Great module. Very simple to understand and work through and it helps you realise how easy and beneficial it is to have a flipped learning model. It will save teachers so much time and allow them to focus on learning in the classroom.
Good, well formed explanations with an appropriate and direct assessment. Unlike other modules here, the answer wasn't vague and subjective. I'd love to see more scenarios explored in assessment to get ideas flowing.
Simple to follow.
I've been advocating the use of the flipped classroom model with tutors for quite some time and I really like how concise and informative the module is. I will be recommending this (and the further resources) in our tutor meetings.
Useful module on the basics of flipped learning for those new to the concept, or as a refresher for those who have some experience using the method. Bite size module useful for busy practitioners to up skill without having to commit to long units that do not fit within busy timetables. Unlike the collaborative modules I has issues with the drag and drop exercise on iPad, however worked ok on laptop.
Short and sweet- with useful resources too. Easy to apply I think in almost any setting, and I'll certainly give it a go.
Interesting topic and relevant in my industry
Concise, basic summary with some additional resources to explore.
Flipped learning is a good way to get students more involved with a topic. Using digital technology is also great for making sure students complete the task before class and sometimes directing them to specific sources.
good course
A good explanation of Flipped Learning
interesting
Thanks
Really clear insight into flipped classroom and one strategy I will definitely be using in my practice.
I liked this a lot. The reflection activity was useful and the video was interesting.
I really like this approach. It is one I use often and effectively with my students of all ages. This approach is enabling and allows me to surmise the level of knowledge and understanding my learners have on a topic and their perspectives of what they have learnt.
it was interesting to be reminded of the VLE.
This type of learning will not suit all learners.
A good overview
Very informatiive and provides simple ideas that can be put into practice
Good activity included and examples
An interesting introduction to the flipped classroom.
Some good ideas but it's planning that is so vital....Does a teacher in the real world have time for this kind of planning?
Loved this module, inspired me to do some research within my organisation and completely switch up my practice to be more specific and supportive. It also enabled me to embed key elements in FE that the students need to work on like BAKS, employability skills, wellbeing, progression, and ownership of their own learning.
Good unit with a lot of application for matching theory and practical assessment . Worth consideration for enhanced use.
Flipped learning is an efficient means of using class time and not wasting it on being told things that are readily available elsewhere.
Efficiency is key on digital learning for me and for my teaching staff as we teach courses which are on a tight time frame, therefore if learners are coming to classes with prepped knowledge, the teacher can use the class time more effectively rather than having to introduce a topic because it has already been addressed.
I've given this a 5 star simply for it opening my eyes to flipped learning, very simple concept that is new to me and I will definitely be using it.
Using the VLE/ Teams for flipped learning is a change we are slowly making rather than just as a repository.
Simple explanation- good for beginners. The assessments are a bit too simple though.
Useful module explaining the basics of flipped learning and examples of how to implement in teaching and learning
Found this interesting and something I tried years ago, but struggled when learners did not do the prep
really useful introduction "Flipped learning makes the best of the strengths of the VLE and the internet for knowledge acquisition and tutor-based classes for adding experience and application."
The example of the chef lecturer was particularly interesting and a new approach to teaching vocational subjects.
I do not wish to provide feedback at this time. Thank you very much indeed.
Good for teachers who deal with motivated students who are keen to learn. Why give homework?
Great way to show how Flipped Learning can be used to expand learning
Good consideratins
I really resent having to be forced to do this and to give feedback on this
Timely reminder of flipped learning and how it can be applied to any teaching method.
Now I really had no idea about a 'Flipped classroom'. This is something that I have experienced and is how I like to teach history. I called it 'pre-work'. I saw it as the knowledge necessary to understand the next lecture or teaching session. So I now understand that it is more than that. This module clarifies and promotes understanding of the 'Flipped Learning' concept.
Very useful. Easy to follow & use.
HAVE ALREADY BEEN USING IN THIS WAY, WORKS WELL FOR MOST LEARNERS
It made me realise the importance of preparation
I really like the model drawing out the unique benefit of face-to-face time with a tutor/teacher. This is core to the benefits.
Might have been interesting to explore how you might manage non-completers who don't do the preparatory work - this needs to be clearly communicated to learners.
For further exploration, the FutureTeacher project has some great free resources on the flipped classroom - https://xot.futureteacher.eu/play.php?template_id=4#flipped
Good ideas on the effectiveness of Flipped learning
I will now be reviewing our pre-course work, good learning
Useful summary. Video audio production voice sounded very automated.
I am really Interested in Flipped Classroom I feel my learners will benefit with this type of method as I teach Level 3 and this would be more effective to do the necessary preparation beforehand teaching Early Years Childcare can help learners to explore and extend their new knowledge in class.
Supported reflection on topic and future planning.
Highlights ownership of learners and preparation prior a session.
Enjoyed this section.
really interesting and a useful tool for tutors to apply to save time and embed a level of understanding and knowledge before classes
