EdTech: Collaborating with learners synchronously (Part 1)
Synchronised working uses technology to deliver learning normally done in a classroom or workshop, without having to be physically present in the room.
Learners can observe and take notes, but also engage with the teacher and fellow students.
All the benefits of working together, including chat and discussion are still available in the scheduled timeslot.
Aim
This module explores the benefits and ways of working in real-time (synchronously) online with your learners.
Objective
After completing this module, you will be able to:
- Explain what synchronous online learning activity is and how it can enhance learning
- Identify the benefits for learners of synchronous online activities
- Recognise different learning contexts in which synchronous online learning activities can support learning
Digital Teaching Professional Framework
This module covers the EdTech component - C3 : Communication and collaboration with learners and between learners (peer support)
- Implement and/or support collaborative learning activities in which digital devices, resources or information strategies are used.
- Implement and/or support collaborative learning activities in a digital environment, e.g. using blogs, wikis, learning management systems.
- Use digital technologies for collaborative knowledge exchange among learners.
- Monitor and guide learners in their collaborative knowledge generation in digital environments.
- Allow learners to digitally present their collaborative efforts and assist them in doing so.
- Use digital technologies for peerassessment and as a support for collaborative self-regulation and peerlearning.
- Use digital technologies to experiment with new formats and methods for collaborative learning.
- Use digital communication tools to respond promptly to learners' questions and doubts, e.g. on assignments.

Engaging and informative.The animated video broke up the written sections which worked well for me.
Made me rethink some things on task-setting as well as how this could be combined with VLE and the flipped classroom concept.
I see this as being the default method of delivery in many FE and independent settings.
Many live lessons over the last year or so.

this is a great way of using digital tech to teach lesson's and refer back to and have a clearer understanding to what has been covered.
Found it very difficult to work out what was required to do based on the information provided from the course material.
I think we should be able in make all lessons accessible to all learners and ILT enables this to happen
I think this module would be appreciated by less experienced practitioners who will find the content easy to understand and follow. The opportunity to take notes helps one to reflect on organisational activities that provide digital solutions.
A nice module reviewing what I know. Would have been useful to have done this when first embarking on remote teaching.
Having used Teams last year I agree with your suggestion that it will be useful to use such resources when the weather is too bad for students to travel into College.
Some good content, but some of the assessment questions were ambiguous e.g. 'Comments on a point made' could equally be an example of assessment as engagement (if it demonstrated learning). Yet despite acknowledging that this task answers were subjective and this was not a test, the automated marking bot still concluded this was 'not quite right'.
More pertinent than ever after a year of lockdown and online learning

Benefits of distance learning noted and I will apply them to my practice.
Once again a 'subjective' test still has right and wrong answers. Also, there is no discussion of the differences between online and face-to-face learning. Why is it that so many learners and staff FAR prefer to work face-to-face, and why is that not discussed here?
Not convinced this is a productive way for most students to learn. The majority of learners need interaction with the tutor present.
Collaboration with our learners is important and this has been proven beyond any arguments throughout lockdown . Many of my students have been totally engaged in online lessons and I feel they are now struggling in the physical classroom
A short introduction in understanding the concept of synchronous learning including 3 simple examples of learner behaviour showing engagement, assessment and interaction with online tools.
"This is quite subjective so don't worry if your answers don't match ours. It isn't a test, just a question to get you thinking about the pedagogy at work here" then what is the point in making me repeat that particular task because my views weren't the exact same as yours? what is the point?

This was a really easy
Great video. I felt the speech was too fast and I was having to play catch up. The level of detail is sufficient for the topic. Again, videos don't really flow into the questions. If the questions are not right or wrong, why have a marking system. Can be demotivating for the learner. Examples of why you (EFT) have suggested those points over what we as learners felt were correct. Have I learnt anything??

Ok got a badge now! Not sure if this feedback function is for you to improve site or for us to reflect. Now I've worked out the site, I like the structure - but might need to be more intuitive for kinetic learners - you will always get the instruction manual skippers in both students and staff!
An interesting module to learn new online tech for teaching.
I have bee using virtual online teaching since March 2020, whilst this was an interesting little module, I didn't learn anything I didn't know.
I did like the info graphics and the way in which it was presented.
Everything I needed to know about Collaborative learning basics was in this module.

it was interesting for me to assess the way in which synchronised learning online can actually be more effective than face to face teaching in the classroom. I have always thought face to face is better but there are certainly classroom activities that benefit from being delivered in this way.
It goes a brief overview of how synchronous virtual teaching can be used. I am interested in building on this further
Nice and short - and to the point. I'm working through the modules, so I don't miss anything but felt this was covering old ground. Understand that everyone has a different starting point, though, so can see its use.
