EdTech: Formative assessment using quizzes
Quizzes have long been recognised as a useful method to test learners' knowledge and check their understanding, but they offer more than that.
Their effectiveness lies in their ability to be accessed when learners want to check learning and can be repeated as often as leaners want, allowing both checks on current learning and iterative checks on progression.
Aim
Using quizzes in formative assessment
Objective
After completing this module you will be able to:
- Use quizzes to improve your teaching and assessment practice
- Use different question types and feedback options to create differentiated levels of challenge
Digital Teaching Professional Framework
This module covers the EdTech component - E1a : Assessment and feedback strategies
- Use digital assessment tools to monitor the learning process and obtain information on learners' progress.
- Use digital technologies to enhance formative assessment strategies, e.g. using classroom response systems, quizzes, games.
- Use digital technologies to enhance formative and summative assessment in tests, e.g. through computer-based tests, implementing audio or video (e.g. in language learning), using simulations or subject-specific digital technologies as test environments.
- Use digital technologies to scaffold learners' assignments and their assessment, e.g. through ePortfolios.
- Use a variety of digital and non-digital assessment formats and be aware of their benefits and drawbacks.
- Critically reflect on the appropriateness of digital assessment approaches and adapt strategies accordingly.

I was surprised to see the range of online resources for quizzes.
Some useful prompts and reminders on quizzes, and the links given are good. It would be nicer to have more in the way of additional resources as downloadable content.
Quizzes are a good way for students to recall information and held revise for a test.
Good reminder of the resources available
Good links to digital software to create quiz content.
Not all learners enjoy quizzes.
Good list of resources
I feel this could be used for our online learners at pre-assessment. Richard has devised a TNA an this could be used for that. Then during the courses to test understanding to prepare the learners for their final assessment.
Good tips on use of quizzes for recall and assessment
-
Standard knowledge of enhanced learning tools
Questions were a bit confusing
all of these applets are much the same and i find them boring and tiresome
A good example to help you understand the process.
I Found it difficult to agree with your answers as again some I found ambiguous
Basic overview of quizzes. Not too sure I agree with some of the placement of the answers in the embedded quiz, though!
I think it is at a very simplistic level, but for somebody who has never considered, or been involved in online/remote learning or using 'quizzes' for assessment, it is a starting point/introduction.
This is fine as an introduction, but it is a bit limited in discussing how quizzes might fit into a SOL. Alternatively, it would be useful to have more info on branching and individualised feedback.
some questions where not too clear
useless website
Would like more on branching
Good way to assess learners and make learning different and fun.
Good
I like the linked resources put at the end of the training so we can deep further into whichever we want to use in our own teaching.
A useful method of assessment to test learners recall of knowledge and progress
I would like to investigate the different forms to use to create a Quiz. I am looking at google forms at present.
Very generic
The module was a good basic level introduction to the use of quizzes, however it could have given more examples of educational quizz questions and more substance behind the different types of questions, and structures that can be developed.
Interesting but could have given some more examples of actual websites and names of quizzes.
Enhancing my skills and judgements
quiz are a good way of testing learner's knowldege.
A interesting and fun way to assess learners. A wide variety of free quizzes and software that can be used.
Really clear on the principles - useful to have follow up links for drilling down to the details. Worth looking at the FutureTeacher resource on Designing Appropriate Assessments (https://xot.futureteacher.eu/play.php?template_id=4#page15section3) and Knowing what they know – getting feedback from students - https://xot.futureteacher.eu/play.php?template_id=4#page4section2. These are good complementary resources that build on these ideas.
quite interesting-has made me more likely to use online tools
Useful ideas for students with SEN.
Useful if you're a teacher as it can make learning more helpful for their learners.
Useful to show difference between assessment and recall.
Very useful for the start of a journey of investigation into the use of formative assessment.
Subject matter very relevant
