EdTech: Designing mobile-friendly learning
Well-designed mobile learning activities can deliver a range of benefits to learners.
This module will look at two scenarios that describe the advantage of good design and the issues that can constrain it.
Aim
How to design mobile-friendly learning
Objective
After completing this module, you will be able to:
- Describe the benefits of mobile learning activities
- Apply the possibilities and constraints of mobile-friendly learning activities for all learners
Digital Teaching Professional Framework
This module covers the EdTech component - B1a : Using teaching and learning resources with learners
- Visualise and explain new concepts in a motivating and engaging way using digital technologies e.g. by using animations or videos.
- Use motivating and engaging activities (e.g. games and quizzes) in digital learning environments.
- Put learners' active uses of digital technologies central to the teaching process.
- Allow learners actively to engage with subject matter using digital technologies, e.g. using different senses, manipulating virtual objects, varying the problem set up to enquire into its structure, etc.
- Promote active learning in a given learning context or for a specific learning objective using appropriate digital technologies.
- Reflect on how suitable the different digital technologies used are in increasing learners' active learning, and to adapt strategies and choices accordingly.

Taking note of your feedback
We greatly appreciate the time taken to provide us with feedback on each module. We regularly review all the feedback provided and use it to inform the development of new modules. Subject to funds being available and other constraints, we will amend existing modules where feedback shows this is required.Feedback from other members about this module
Basic but informative scenarios that demonstrate the advantages of digital technology and addressing potential issues that could arise.
The video is useful...the questions/task is a bit confusing though, even when the answers are revealed.
Interesting, particularly when addressing the problems with mobile phone use.
Provided some interesting ideas. I did get a little confused with the questions at the end though.
Using phones is a great way to engage learners in tasks. They get to earn from mistakes made too.

Straightforward
Interesting.
Excellent unit, Many Thanks
Useful for planning
Some useful points to consider when using mobile devices for learning.
I like the examples of how mobile learning was used to demonstrate poor communication.
Good module
This wasn't what I was expecting but still good to work through
Questions seemed slightly misleading. Could have done with more explanation or clearer lines of questioning...
Not considered this before so was good
This module provided food for thought.
not applicable to my learners who are based in a prison without access to use their phones
Useful for a beginners overview.
The tasks do not give what you think the right responses were, it would be helpful to see that,
Interesting, but matching activity is a little confusing
Good.
Portability would seem to be the major point here, along with the access to a device for all. There's also something to be said for moving away from 'traditional' devices to embrace new technology - if you can refer to mobiles as such. Key thing has to be that advantages are gained by using mobile devices over 'static'.
Good
Some things to comsider
Answers were a little ambiguous
The module assists in identifying constraints that may need to be considered when designing mobile learning activities. Thought it was very useful!
Some worthwhile ideas to consider but will need to be careful due to constraints of working with SEN learners.
By having the students use their own devices saves the college money, however some students would rather go on social media to catch up with their friends rather than carry out the work set.
Can be difficult if members of a group task do not like sharing mobile information or if there are problems accessing the internet or wifi. Signal may not be good either. Can lead to mixed message getting through as well.
Excellent outline of barriers/challenges to creating useful and accessible mobile learning activities.
Very poor
The activity at the end was a bit confusing.
