EdTech: Assessing transferable skills
The embedding of digital technology across all forms of subject-assessment creates opportunities for developing learners’ transferable skills over and above vocational expertise that is at the core of their learning programmes.
This module looks at how you can make transferable skills development an explicit planned outcome of your assessment strategy and at ways to work together with colleagues to deliver it as a shared goal.
Aim
This module aims to help you review and develop innovative teaching approaches when assessing transferable skills
Objective
After completing this module you will be able to:
- Critically reflect upon the ways in which subject-specific assessment can help to develop learners' transferable skills
- Choose appropriate digital tools to support and assess learners' development of transferable skills
- Work with colleagues in other subject areas to build practices that promote the development of transferable skills
Digital Teaching Professional Framework
This module covers the EdTech component - E1a : Assessment and feedback strategies
- Use digital assessment tools to monitor the learning process and obtain information on learners' progress.
- Use digital technologies to enhance formative assessment strategies, e.g. using classroom response systems, quizzes, games.
- Use digital technologies to enhance formative and summative assessment in tests, e.g. through computer-based tests, implementing audio or video (e.g. in language learning), using simulations or subject-specific digital technologies as test environments.
- Use digital technologies to scaffold learners' assignments and their assessment, e.g. through ePortfolios.
- Use a variety of digital and non-digital assessment formats and be aware of their benefits and drawbacks.
- Critically reflect on the appropriateness of digital assessment approaches and adapt strategies accordingly.

This unit gives a good example of the importance of learners developing transferrable digital skills and how these can be used in the work situation.
The example in the video is very useful, and I like the line 'digital skills are no longer optional'--not just relevant for employability for students... but also for teachers!
I like the emphasis on collaboration
This module has given me good ideas that I will look to include in the lesson plans.
Transferable skills are important and should be encouraged.
I picked up some useful ideas for implementing new activities to enhance my students 'soft skills'.
Some good information.
Good examples given that are easily adapted to any topic
So many Digital tools to use- it is about being selective.
Knowing how your admin has set up your systems is also vital so clear instructive induction training is essential, I like the fact that you can down load the transcript and your notes on this course it makes reflection to aid embedding the learning accessible and at the pace the learner need- with out holding up progress, a nice learning resource - It is up to the teacher to make sure the assessment is SMART, robust and engages the students to self assess so they can continue to build their skills after completion of a set course.
Good
Useful illustration on how to combine the development of digital and transferrable skills.
Couldn't agree with the communications statement.
Good idea for learners who are ICT literate.
This was interesting and enhances the learners collaboratively.
Some ideas that I could use with my learners with SEN.
Maybe helpful to students in assessments and coursework.
Gives an example of getting students to work collaboratively but doesn't actually cover the 'HOW' of assessing their transferable skills in the process.
.
I thought this was a good module to generate some thoughts on incorporating digital skills into practice in the classroom. Student collaboration was strongly highlighted.
Nothing new.
