EdTech: Accommodating the learner's digital context
This module looks at an individual's digital context based on personal access to the appropriate technology, their awareness of it, and the digital skills to make use of them.
Aim
This module shows you how to identify and accommodate the learner's digital context.
Objective
After completing this module you will be able to:
- Define digital context
- Describe and discuss its implications for delivering learning
Digital Teaching Professional Framework
This module covers the EdTech component - F1 : Accessibility
- Provide equitable access to appropriate digital technologies and resources, e.g. ensuring that all learners have access to the digital technologies used.
- Select and use digital strategies which respond to the learner's digital context, e.g. contextual constraints to their technology use (e.g. availability, institutional restrictions - offender learning, work based learning), competences, expectations, attitudes, misconceptions and misuses.
- Use digital technologies and strategies, e.g. assistive technologies, designed for learners' in need of special support (e.g. learners with physical or mental constraints; learners with learning disorders).
- Consider and respond to potential accessibility issues when selecting, modifying or creating digital resources and to provide alternative or compensatory tools or approaches for learners with special needs.
- Use design principles for increasing accessibility for the resources and digital environments used in teaching.
- Continuously monitor and reflect on the suitability of the measures implemented to improve accessibility and adapt strategies accordingly.

Very insightful
Highlighted the barriers people could encounter when using technology
This unit has made me more aware of the issues certain learners have come from. And helping the learner build ICT skills and experience could actually aid learners which are not up to date with the latest ICT tools.
I found this module very interesting and things that I had not considered before.
Interesting to consider characteristics, cultural differences and health as contributors to personal access issues to digital skills. I also found the activity enjoyable to determine what I do now and what I could consider doing, particularly as getting learners to identify own technologies to support learning demonstrates respect through learner voice
Useful ideas for self-development as a tutor.
Very useful some excellent ideas presented.
I’m really excited to see that I already do a lot of the suggestions. I will try making design changes as I go instead of for the next session.
A really useful module that made me think about how I could establish a learner's access to technology and their ability with technology at the start of their programme.
Interesting module which gave some ideas on apps and programmes to support learning.
I found this rather vague - there did not seem to be much in the way of practical strategies.
Some interesting scenarios to reflect upon here.
Excellent
This reinforces the necessity for looking at the individual needs of students so that you can provide them with the best experience of teaching and learning.
The reflective/ action plan at the end is very useful.
Quite an objective approach taken to the 'right answers' of the admittedly subjective test. There.
A really positive self reflective activity on one's own accessibility understanding for own learners.
I have found this module interesting and something I can put into practise.
A few new things to think about.
Could be longer and give more detail/examples before the quiz.
Younger learners are the ones most likely to embrace new teaching technologies with many mature students being less adaptable and willing to take on new ideas in teaching.
Clear and precise. However, it is somewhat frustrating that at HMP Coldingley we are not yet able to offer live online learning.
The last exercise was unclear and subjective it seemed to me. Not sure the meaning of what was achieved, and certainly had no idea what it was trying to teach me.
You reflect within this module which helps you plan with your own development and that within your establishment.
I liked the different dynamic of thinking about learners in prison, however, I did feel the link was missed as the introduction did not fully explain the angle this learning was going to take place. I do feel this this is an area that may need approaching to further enhance learning. There were a few sentence structure errors.
I completed this module and it did not give me a badge, I have logged in on another day to re do. Its a bit frustrating as I completed twice on teh first attempt
Given me lots of ideas to help my learners
The 1st quiz is confusing - it says there is no right or wrong answers yet it says what you have selected is incorrect! Pls change this - it is very confusing for staff and those completing the module.
Also under the links there is the AccessApps - it says that this app (page) has not been updated in over 4 years and to access another page - it's out of date so should be removed from your list of links.
I found this open my thoughts a little to a learner's history which is something I will heavily consider in the future
Useful reminder
I felt this module was really useful and some great links to add ons that could support learners. The trouble is remembering where to find all of it! Possibly needs some updating based on law for public sector websites?
Offender learning?
Helpful
enjoying this as it is helping with my understanding.
it was good to see that the methods I use are in line with this training
Found this really useful.
Informative
Good module looks at an individual's digital context based on personal access to the appropriate technology
I found this one a little bit confusing about learning styles and barriers, but I got there in the end.
this unit is really good because it acknowledges the limitation of technology.
On part of the page was not working, I've tried to refresh the page, but still the same technical issue.
