EdTech: Accessibility and the law: Getting it right
Legislation for accessibility changed in a very positive way with The Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations (2018). This module looks at how to stay on the right side of these regulations.
Aim
This module shows you the issues and implications of current legislation around accessibility.
Objective
After completing this module you will be able to:
- Identify the key elements of the law regarding accessibility
- Describe the implications for your teaching practice
Digital Teaching Professional Framework
This module covers the EdTech component - F1 : Accessibility
- Provide equitable access to appropriate digital technologies and resources, e.g. ensuring that all learners have access to the digital technologies used.
- Select and use digital strategies which respond to the learner's digital context, e.g. contextual constraints to their technology use (e.g. availability, institutional restrictions - offender learning, work based learning), competences, expectations, attitudes, misconceptions and misuses.
- Use digital technologies and strategies, e.g. assistive technologies, designed for learners' in need of special support (e.g. learners with physical or mental constraints; learners with learning disorders).
- Consider and respond to potential accessibility issues when selecting, modifying or creating digital resources and to provide alternative or compensatory tools or approaches for learners with special needs.
- Use design principles for increasing accessibility for the resources and digital environments used in teaching.
- Continuously monitor and reflect on the suitability of the measures implemented to improve accessibility and adapt strategies accordingly.

Concise and informative, with links to some really helpful resources.
Points for consideration.
Thank you. This is first nugget from the ACCESSIBILITY unit, and already an eye-opener for me and my organisation. We have some work to do with the forthcoming change in law, but quite rightly so! The additional links for this are great, and I am already addicted to using the 'Nibbler' tool. Great stuff.
future teacher 3.0 links are extraordinarily useful
Good
very informative
It allowed me to be up to date with legislation and let me evaluate my current inclusive practice in regards to resources.
Completed
Largely applies at the organisational level rather than tutors, but something to consider when adding resources that are to be accessed via the VLE?
The module has helped me reflect on my own practice and getting help to increase my skills as I develop more online learning this academic year due to the influence of COVID 19
Informative I was not aware of the new legislation it will definitely make me think about how diverse a resource is before loading it into classrooms.
Couldn't get this to work for any of my own resources (even those uploaded to our VLE). Was able to 'assess; the college website in general.
Further guidance / instruction on how to use accessibility tracker (e.g. nibbler) would be helpful please.
Thanks - lots to think about and review now.
very helpful have kept a copy of the Transcript as reference
A1.
Quick and Easy to understand
Remember that there are some things which the college cannot do
Valuable information about accessibility regulations and statement.
This module was very helpful in clarifying the accessibility requirements for public sector organisations and highlighting the implications for teachers and teaching practice.
Very informative.
This is a good check for what is and isn't accessible
Very simple to navigate and lots of information in a short video
This was really informative and makes me realise that i need to continually develop my resources to ensure they fully accessible to all learners.
An interesting module that explains the updates that will occur in September 2020 regarding the law and how students with disabilities will be able to compare providers. This is a key piece of work that would be seen by senior managers. The links at the bottom of the module are clear and they all work. the resources connected to the links are relevant and will raise teachers awareness on the subject of inclusivity. They supply interesting strategies that teachers can utilise, for example 'toe to toe' promotes reading in students. They are all worth exploring.
It is good to know that the organisations needs to meet accessibility guidelines by September 2020 and update their resources.
Very relevant and informative and very essential
interesting learning about the accessibility statement
Valuable introduction to the new legislation and organisations' responsibilities under it.
Good information to think about.
Useful introduction to the legal requirements and further resources section.
I was unaware of the Sept
2020 deadline.
Good easy video to understand our compliance
This module was useful in outlining the contents of an Accessibility Statement.
It was very informative, but I had to keep stopping and replaying the video as I felt it went quite fast and I missed alot of the content.
A useful overview to the new legislation
Fine once you get used to it.
Informative starter
simple and effective module
Information is presented in an easy to understand and digestible fashion.
Very clear
Clear and simple to understand. Covers key points well. Useful further information.
This module, in the further reading section, highlighted resources I wasn't previously aware of.
highlighted some areas for me to work on
Very helpful refresher on latest legislation
I have learnt more about accessibility
There was a good link to check if the website you are posting to students is accessible and accommodating for them.
This module highlighted legislative requirements for public sector organisations and the continued commitment to making progress in this area.
informative video
This unit has given me a good basic understanding of Accessibility for learners with support needs.
The requirements to be compliant with legislation and what the guidance statement says is what stood out for me in particular
Interesting, we find however that working in offender learning we are restriced to what we can offer.
This is good to know what adjustments and why adjustments have to be made.
Some very interesting made within the module.
User friendly and helpful
This a great module really clear.
Really useful insights and materials.
very useful module
Useful to be mindful of how accessible our resources are to learners and colleagues alike.
I would have been useful to see examples of compliant v compliant / strong v weaker online learning resources.
Good starting point
I found it interesting and I will share my knowledge.

Another excellent module .
Useful and informative information.

the law changes and this needs to be imparted to staff using online digital platforms on a regular basis. It also acts as a refresher
Illuminating
More examples needed.
Some content is not compatible with our learners.
I learnt a lot of new material on this module. I wasn't aware of the compatibility date in September. I found the nibbler website checker a really useful tool and will definitely use this in the future.
Good introduction to the regulations.
It was ok but more of a focus on learning as it was just a video and one question to answer.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
this is the 8th attempt and i wonder if the system had a glitch as its now accepting my same answers
This module has made me review and reflect on my own work to ensure it is accessible for all
None
