EdTech: Learning benefits of text to speech
This module explores the use of spoken text through devices such as e-readers and eBooks to overcome barriers to learning for a range of learners, not only those with a sight impairment.
Aim
This module shows the uses of screen readers and screen readable learning content to support learning.
Objective
After completing this module you will be able to:
- Describe the uses of screen readers and text to speech for supporting learning
- Design learning and assessment activities that use screen readable resources
Digital Teaching Professional Framework
This module covers the EdTech component - B1a : Using teaching and learning resources with learners
- Visualise and explain new concepts in a motivating and engaging way using digital technologies e.g. by using animations or videos.
- Use motivating and engaging activities (e.g. games and quizzes) in digital learning environments.
- Put learners' active uses of digital technologies central to the teaching process.
- Allow learners actively to engage with subject matter using digital technologies, e.g. using different senses, manipulating virtual objects, varying the problem set up to enquire into its structure, etc.
- Promote active learning in a given learning context or for a specific learning objective using appropriate digital technologies.
- Reflect on how suitable the different digital technologies used are in increasing learners' active learning, and to adapt strategies and choices accordingly.

A fairly informative module.
This is a good introduction
I really find the resource links useful. I will be using the text to speech websites with my learners.
Very informative
Useful links.
very useful links
https://ttsreader.com/ is a very useful tool to use
very interesting
The importance of knowing screen readers and how these present information. The one I used was not the best and I would get frustrated I think listening to these for longer periods. Doing research beforehand is key
These are great devices and ways to keep everyone inclusion from low level readers to visual impairment student's.
Found good websites for text to speech and its uses.
Very interesting module with some very useful tools and information which I could definitely use in my teaching.
Short and sweet.
I like having the links and having to 'play' with the tool and feedback on that in real times. I prefer this concrete experience.
Great to know about free tools to use on the internet. Would like to know more about use of this when reading tables, bullet points etc...
This module made me look at how screen readers can be useful for most learners and the benefits of showing learners this tool.
Layout and navigation of these resources is very poor, when finished i hit 'close' and it showed me as not started......
Really useful, clearly explained, new resources suggested that will prove really useful in my teaching.
Txt to speech i have found is a good way to pronunciation words.
The links did not work and kept freezing
This is a great explanation of the differences between screen readers and text to speech. It also allowed me to try an app and give evaluate. There were lots of useful resources for different situations included at the bottom of the module too.
Useful summary to uses of screen reader and text to speech for learners
Very useful module
The text to speech function is a wonderful idea, however I found that the voice made a few mistakes as it stressed the wrong syllable in a couple of words which then changed the meaning. Overall I would say this is a good tool for learners who would otherwise be unable to access their learning.
Good use of tools available
Need to find a good quality online resource.
interesting and I am sure useful for students.
Good Qs to think about how and why to use screenreaders
was ok but not impressed with ereader links as they sounded too robotic!
Interesting. I need to write fifteen words to gain my badge, so this part is nonsense!
Really interesting to find there are easily accessible programmes online that can help learners when needed.
Frustrating.
excellent
Good module: I can now explore ways in which I can facilitate learning more creatively and not necessarily with students with a disability.
Brilliant text2speak information for supporting my adult learners struggling with literacy/dyslexia
This module didn't present much in the way of new information. Some creative suggestions for the use of TTS resources would be an improvement.
It was good to research how recorded lessons can be supplemented to be accessible to all learners now and in the future.
Will be using suggestions in practice
Excellent external links. Very handy.
Text to speech is useful and can be used in Reading lessons to boost comprehension.
I have used text to speech software before but I think giving my students the links you had that are free will enable them to use it at home or when they feel they needed the extra reading support
Really useful tools to use in the class to support students with their reading.

I have a small number of learners that have dyslexia and find reading large blocks of text off putting. I will offer the option of text to speech to see if these and other learners with reading difficulties can benefit, especially during revision sessions where the novelty may hold their attention and engage them more in there own learning.
Really useful links which I can use in practise
Good module
Some of the reading apps didn't work. apart from an interesting module.
Financing such technology would be an issue for us. Unsure how relevant this part of the module really is.
The Text to Speech resource was really interesting, informative and versatile. I will definitely use it in all my text resources.
Useful app
Useful content - but as regards course design - I think only one button is needed under the slider questions - I missed the earlier ones after adjusting the sliders and therefore the course didn't show as complete when I got to the end - had to go back and check why.
.
This opened my eyes to the screen readers. I will now look into options and ensure the accent is correct and suitable for the learner's I am teaching. This is to ensure words are pronounced correctly when using spoken English
This was really helpful, really enjoyed learning how to create mp3
Good module that has reminded me to direct learners to screen reader sites to help them process the information in a way that suits them if reading is not a strong point
Loved this module. Discovered how to add speach.
Good to see a few other text to speech options - not just Microsoft immersive reader
Useful as it allowed me to compare a couple of text to speech tools
It was useful to be given the option to try different text to speech software and hear how they sound different.
Informative
The tool was useful to understand what the text to speech will do for the learner and give a good understanding of its accurately. My only concern with this and setting independent learning, is if a learner has visual needs and need to upload their document. Will they be able to complete this?
This was informative and the websites provided for text to speech I have noted down and will add these as resources to some of the learning resources that we create for new tutors.
Interesting module exploring text to speech
