This module looks at what is meant by future-proofing content, why it is necessary and why it is increasingly important.
The principles and practice of future-proofing content together with some simple techniques are examined in the paired module Principles and practice of future proofing content.
Aim
The module shows you what future proofing means for content and resources?
Objective
After completing this module, you will be able to:
- List the benefits of future proofing
- Recognise where and when it is appropriate

Taking note of your feedback
We greatly appreciate the time taken to provide us with feedback on each module. We regularly review all the feedback provided and use it to inform the development of new modules. Subject to funds being available and other constraints, we will amend existing modules where feedback shows this is required.Feedback from other members about this module
Future proofing is important.
Of the modules I've completed, this has been the most egregious in its overuse of overly complicated language to explain what should be simple teaching activities. The subject resonates well with what my teaching team does and there is useful information in here, but the way the information is presented and the activity is laid out seems to have no consideration for being concise.
Good ideas here
Interesting ideas
Again, why do we have to reset all of the answers when only one or two require changes?
I agree it is imperative that we design all our learning activities and assessments with a view to regular updating and reviewing .
Some good ideas on how to future proof content, I am going to look at this with having some 'fixed' slides that don't change and 'flexible' ones that need to be regularly updated.
The matching activity was took big for my screen which made it difficult to see the sentence and the boxes before I had placed a couple.
Good to consider future proofing.
I wasn't sure what was meant by 'using a page reader with the URL added' I tried to look up what a page reader is, but the only information I found is about text to speech, which is not what I think this is on about.
Good module looks at what is meant by future-proofing content
I really enjoyed the activity Value to the teacher vs. Value to the learner
"Value to the teacher
Resources are re-interpreted, and not re-invented each year: Reusing resources saves time and effort in not having to rewrite resources each year from scratch. Amendment is always better that rewriting.
Resources are designed for easy adaption to provide better learning utility: Saving in a format that allows personal editing makes adaption easier for re-use.
Future-proofed resources form a body of knowledge with depth in its own right: General adding to resources and joining them together but mixing content adds to what is made available to learners.
Value to the learner
Resources have the richness of additions from previous uses: Learners gain from additions to resources that have come from previous learners and teachers.
By adding contemporary content, it leaves a legacy of historical perspective: When material is added as opposed to just being replaced with an update, resources grow in terms of what they offer. Historical development of a subject or topic is one of those benefits.
Learners can personalise learning content and store it for their own future continuing learning: Learners can keep their own copies of resource for future reference and use in their own practice."
Future proofing resources will be useful for many as we continue to move forward with more digital content and the every changing world, that seems to be gaining speed all the time!
It was okay
Some useful resources to investigate
Probably a topic that is increasing in importance as new formats come online. PDF is fine as far as it goes but without the full version editing might not be possible at a later date unless the original, non-standard document is retained
good module
More specific detail would be better
The unit was challenging when moving the answers around this needs to be clearer. Thankyou
Common sense again
Very useful module. I learnt the meaning of future proofing and I downloaded scannable application as a result (just one example).
Comprehensive.
Good introduction with sign posting to further information and modules.
Decent examples. Adapt and thrive (and survive) really.
Good to think about making sure good resources are shared and stored correctly and easily accessible for others.
