EdTech: Active learning spaces
This module looks the characteristics of traditional and active learning spaces, both as concepts and as practical pedagogy. It looks at ways to deliver active learning within more restricted and lesser resourced contexts.
The module pairs with the Active learning: experience and outcomes module.
Aim
The module shows you the characteristics of an active learning space.
Objective
After completing this module, you will be able to:
- Describe an active learning space
- Consider how an active learning space could be created
Digital Teaching Professional Framework
This module covers the EdTech component - B1a : Using teaching and learning resources with learners
- Visualise and explain new concepts in a motivating and engaging way using digital technologies e.g. by using animations or videos.
- Use motivating and engaging activities (e.g. games and quizzes) in digital learning environments.
- Put learners' active uses of digital technologies central to the teaching process.
- Allow learners actively to engage with subject matter using digital technologies, e.g. using different senses, manipulating virtual objects, varying the problem set up to enquire into its structure, etc.
- Promote active learning in a given learning context or for a specific learning objective using appropriate digital technologies.
- Reflect on how suitable the different digital technologies used are in increasing learners' active learning, and to adapt strategies and choices accordingly.

Getting student to take ownership of their learning and share ideas with each other is giving them the skills to succeed in the workplace.
Good Course
Enjoyable. Prompted thinking which I will aim to use in the future.
Ideas will not work for all types of learners.
good ideas
Interesting although difficult in these times of Covid
Active learning spaces are a great idea whereby the teacher’s role is to support and guide discussion and learning. However, in education today with the problems of lockdown and social distancing this is unobtainable.
Encouragement over teams for students to talk and to interact with each other, to discuss, to share, to work together,
to solve problems and to collaborate is really difficult. The students conversations are often stunted and often interaction is sporadic
I really enjoyed this one very interesting
Not a fan of the traditional layout of a class - I prefer large blocks of 6/8 facing each other. Not this year in COVID though.
Interesting concept, can try this
Good resource - very helpful
Does not discuss how active learning can be done for a solely online course, with no face-2-face interaction, as is happening with Covid restrictions at the moment.
Informative
Very interesting.
I need to move away from a passive learning environment!
An excellent module that helps you in redesigning appropriate learning spaces to foster the desired learning engagement and activity. Good tips!
The questions are not working as unable to select answers to any of the questions
Very interesting perspective on traditional vs modern classrooms.
Clever idea, would work well within my classes.
thought provoking
Good
a good module, made me think.
A very good way to consider active learning spaces, engaging learners inside and outside of the traditional classroom environment.
not currently practical due to the lack of digital resources available to learners
I struggled with engaging my learners but want to aim to implement this concept of active learning.
We need to consider how to complete this in the digital classroom.
Room layout discussion may need to be re-visited in line with current Covid 19 restrictions.
No learner facing the front is a great idea.
This was enjoyable, I always consider flip learning and active learning.
This was good, clearly set out
Very good module. Clear, bite-size chunk of learning which gets you thinking!
