EdTech: Face-to-face learning 1: The four Ms
This module explores the notion of face-to-face learning in a physical space such as a classroom and the place of technology in emerging pedagogy.
It describes a framework for considering the activities and intended outcomes of face-to-face interaction.
Aim
How to rethink the modern classroom to make your use of technology more effective.
Objective
After completing this module, you will be able to:
- Describe a framework for choosing appropriate technology for a face-to-face teaching session
- Identify opportunities for classroom technology to support active engagement by learners
Digital Teaching Professional Framework
This module covers the EdTech component - B2 : Teaching context: face-to-face
- Use learning environment technologies to support teaching, e.g. electronic whiteboards, mobile devices.
- Structure sessions so that different (practitioner-led and learner-led) digital activities jointly reinforce the learning objective.
- Structure and manage content, collaboration and interaction in a digital environment.
- Consider how practitioner-led digital interventions can best support the learning objective.
- Reflect on the effectiveness and appropriateness of the digital teaching strategies chosen and flexibly adjust methods and strategies.
- Experiment with and develop new formats and teaching methods (e.g. flipped classroom).

Very straight forward and clear.
great info
Informative
Could be more challenging and detailed
It has taken me until module seven to work out how to navigate these modules. I also do not see how to get from module to another. Thank goodness Jenny Harris has sent me links to them all, so I am going through them again.
The pictures do not help me, but thankfully the words are pretty good. However, the person reading access pronounces it as assess.
This has made me consider upgrading to a newer version of surface pro so I can use my old device in tablet format as a control panel for the smart board display and therefore I can be more mobile and non static in my presence. This will allow me to lightly police behaviour if necessary, measure learning more for Q&A and in the process build better relationships with the learners (become more personal).
Great intro
Good opener
Module explains what activities can be used in classroom.
Enjoyed this, very informative
Found that simple but really effective ........ enjoyed that element
Some useful information on here
useful introduction
I found the idea of the 4M's an interesting perspective on using technology in the classroom, the idea of the classroom as a meeting place, making learning a place of work, activity and engagement is refreshing and made me think about how I communicate with students in a face to face classroom setting.
lots of information in such a short time. maybe the video should be longer and the presenter could talk slower.
Didn't quite get how to move the items around after watching video so feel I must have missed something along the way - also after thinking about a definition of education technology and writing it out in the notes and saving it - it did not save and I lost the definition I'd written.
great thanks.
Interesting points.
I hadn't thought about the 4M framework previously. Helpful!
I have found a certain degree of uncertainty in navigating so far, but perhaps that will change as I become more familiar with thee site layout on further modules. Also, there seems to be many alternative views of what the 4 Ms are.
the VLE is the same as the real classroom. technology enables this.
Fully agree.
Great introduction to the 4 M's, something which I've not come across before.
not bad
A combination of face-to-face pedagogy and classroom technology will help learners to succeed.
Good course
An interesting concept to consider when looking at online learning.
Quite an interesting module
Interesting.
As always, the resources page is a treasure trove. The Ed Tech timeline is fascinating, even if it does make me feel old.
A very good module , many thanks.
A good start in introducing the 4 M's. More indepth information will be required for me to be able to embed this in my practice.
The use of the 4 M's is a structured way to construct a digital lesson to resemble an actual face to face session.
Simplified introduction but the video incites ideas of how to use technology more within the classroom. Good starter.
Good module
simple but brief overview of how to consider implementing technology in the classroom, and provides a model to help plan and ensure effective use of technology.
This was a good module as it made me reflect on what teaching tech I am utilising which is currently available to me.
easy to follow, clear information.
Good reminder to always have a started activity so learners are engaged from the beginning of the lesson.
A really useful introduction, meaningful, too "Face-to-face learning is characterised by meeting, making learning happen, measuring what has happened and building memory."
If allowing BOYD in your organisation it does become a little harder to plan, you don't know what devices will turn up each week with your groups.
I actually think what the four M's are could have been outlined clearer in the video
This is a tricky subject to pitch. Choosing an example where there's a good level of resourcing is good from the perspective that it demonstrates that you can have lots of kit and STILL need to rethink what you do in order to exploit the pedagogical opportunities. However it makes it harder to identify with when you teach in a poorly resourced classroom with dodgy connectivity. The latter is more realistic but more challenging to develop in an exemplary way.
Thank you. A good start to explaining how technology can now be used.
A good module on the classroom
The interaction was quite easy compared to the interaction (drag and drop exercise) in the extending your digital skills module. I am still thinking or a working definition of classroom technology. I like the four Ms - meet, make, measure and memory.
The 4 m's are present, although unknowingly in most (ICT) lessons if they are planned effectively
Good
I will look at adopting 4 M’s strategy I have never delivered training remotely before so this a huge learning curve for me going forward
More info on the best utilisation when there is limited tech available would be good.
Interesting take on the use of technology and how it should be viewed and utilized by a teacher.
goof
Worked well.
good to rethink lesson pegagogy
Good stuff
