EdTech: Planning for teaching with technology
An increasingly important definition views learning as a change in long-term memory. Theories of effective teaching and learning focus on enabling the progressive acquisition of knowledge by learners.
This module looks at Barak Rosenshine’s widely used Principles of Instruction. They offer a research-based framework for planning and delivering learning that can also be used to guide a teacher’s choice and application of technology in face-to-face learning.
Aim
How to use a structured approach to instruction to plan teaching and the use of technology.
Objective
After completing this module, you will be able to:
- Apply Rosenshine’s principles of instruction to plan and deliver effective learning
- Improve your use of technology in face-to-face teaching sessions
Digital Teaching Professional Framework
This module covers the EdTech component - B2 : Teaching context: face-to-face
- Use learning environment technologies to support teaching, e.g. electronic whiteboards, mobile devices.
- Structure sessions so that different (practitioner-led and learner-led) digital activities jointly reinforce the learning objective.
- Structure and manage content, collaboration and interaction in a digital environment.
- Consider how practitioner-led digital interventions can best support the learning objective.
- Reflect on the effectiveness and appropriateness of the digital teaching strategies chosen and flexibly adjust methods and strategies.
- Experiment with and develop new formats and teaching methods (e.g. flipped classroom).

Some really informative links
There is a lot to think about. My aim is to consciously apply Rosenshine's principles using a stepped approach.
Anything that can provide a proven framework for developing teaching materials can be at least tried to guage its effectiveness.
I have not heard about Rosenshine before so I need to read more to increase my own UPK and how I can use it in my delivery
More info on the 10 principles would be good and the info does not relate fully to the assessment due to lack of information
An interesting review of Rosenshine's principles with some excellent resources for further study.
Good, but it is not very clear as to where each statement should go as some may fit in multiple categories.
A lot to digest in the time.
Ok but didn't quite understand. Could have done with more detailed information
Thanks, this has given me things to think about and also highlights the things I am already doing.
Short but a good overview of the theory
Just got this one a bit wrong on the 1st attempt and then found the boxes were a little small to get the statements in on the second so one dropped into the wrong box - Hence the 3rd attempt. Probably operator error but more space in the boxes may help?
Could have done with a bit more explanation on that.
Will read more about the 10 Principles.
thank you - I think the reflective question could be re-worded but the overall learning was good.
Quite a short model for such important aspect with lots to recall
I loved this module! I am a digital skills lecturer and I liked the 10 Principles by Rosenshine and how they were adapted to 4 - Review, Deliver, Question and Practice. I enjoyed the drag and drop exercise too. Thanks!!
As a new teacher this is a great introduction to Barak Rosenshine's principles.
Usefull
Review, deliver, questions, practice!
Good course
Interesting insight into the 4 key principles; review, sequence, question and practice which will support me further in my planning and delivery
I have learned of a different way for linking prior learning to the current topic and the need to place these in steps and consider the principles to acheive this which I need to think about further.
good
Varied information.
A more demanding module , many thanks.
A useful overview of blended learning.
Excellent idea created of evaluating a session by producing a quiz to be used as recap session the following week to recap content. I would use Kahoot and get other learners to take part in recap activities.
I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I was already following 8 of Rosenshine's principles. At face value is appears to be common sense but if you were the structure lessons to include all of these principles I wonder how much more effective the lesson would be? This sis something that I will be trying in a future series of lessons.
I like this one with the intro of a model to use
Interesting simple reminder of principle steps in creating long term learning.
This module enabled me to apply Rosenshine's Principles of instruction to my practice. It was excellent at helping me identify where I could use technology more effectively in the process of learning soft skills, employability skills, wellbeing, progression,
Rosenshines principals are really useful to frame EdTech - helpful video
Rosenhine's principles of instruction gave me a clear way of practically applying tech in face to face learning.
Rosenshine's theory is a really useful reminder. Similar to CSPAR which is used in our settting.
I I found the Rosenshein’s principles in action very interesting especially the stages. The importance of review prior learning before moving on, delivering learning in small steps to avoid overload and making sure that you engage learners actively and regularly check on learning.
To ensure I follow this approach when teaching a new unit this week.
I had to keep doing the assignment again because I didn't know I had to read through the summary
really useful theory, great youtube links,
"Barak Rosenshine’s ten Principles of Instruction bring together the findings of cognitive and educational
research into a practical framework.
The ten principles are based on four basic themes:
1. Review prior learning before moving on
2. Deliver learning in small supported steps to avoid cognitive overload
3. Question, prompt and engage learners actively
4. Practice"
Basic and not really clear. Goes against it's own principles by directing information at you.
Was very good. Showed the steps on how digital technology can be used to assist teaching
wow what a revelation great stuff
Good introduction but it would be nice to have a list of the 10 principles here as they are mentioned often in the video.
This is great
I thought this was really helpful.
This was my first ETF module. I found it interesting with multiple sources that enabled greater conceptual knowledge and enthusiastic to do more.
I wonder if the sources can be downloaded automatically for retrieval and accessible from cloud technologies?
Quick and simple overview of one of the main theories of teaching
Useful & insightful
I am happy with the module. I just missed the option to type in bold, underline or colour in the "notes" box.
Good simple intro
I am a huge fan of the Rosenshine Principles. Some excellent further resources attached and a good poster. This was a really informative module and highly relevant given how educators have had to embrace technology more now than ever before.
I would have liked to see the 10 principles listed within the module.
Interesting concepts; would be good to learn more on this
I think this could go further to explain Rosenshine's principles, as the details given were rather vague and basic
Some really good material (especially the links) but I would have liked to see all the principles listed somewhere (whether 10 or 17!) embedded in the 4 overarching themes. Maybe worth mentioning other models too like Keller's ARCS model of motivational course design.
Some mismatch between the phrases used in the activity and the phrases used in the feedback made it hard to make sense of the feedback.
Great!
Useful guide with can easily be applied in a teaching environment at any age
Good
