EdTech: Best tool for the job
Knowing how to choose the right tool or app for a task is a key skill for life and work. It requires more than understanding the broad purpose and technical capabilities of tools and packages. It calls on a learner’s ability to analyse a problem, plan an activity, monitor progress and evaluate outcomes.
This module looks at how teachers can help learners to develop this skill set.
Aim
How to use learners’ choice to develop effective learning strategies.
Objective
After completing the module, you will be able to:
- Develop effective learner strategies for problem solving around choosing the best tool for the job
- Create activities and opportunities to introduce, practice and refine these strategies
Digital Teaching Professional Framework
This module covers the EdTech component - C2 : Supporting study skills
- Identify and solve technical problems when operating devices and using digital environments.
- Adjust and customise digital environments to personal needs.
- Identify, evaluate, select and use digital technologies and possible technological responses to solve a given task or problem.
- Use digital technologies in innovative ways to create learning.
- Understand where a learner's digital competence needs to be improved or updated.
- Support others in their digital competence development.
- Seek opportunities for selfdevelopment and to keep up-to-date with digital evolution.

Taking note of your feedback
We greatly appreciate the time taken to provide us with feedback on each module. We regularly review all the feedback provided and use it to inform the development of new modules. Subject to funds being available and other constraints, we will amend existing modules where feedback shows this is required.Feedback from other members about this module
Good
No cohort learners currently
More of a process for the longer term course in that you want learners to develop the ability to select appropriate tools for themselves. Certainly a useful process for beginners but in the time available on a short course this process might be limited.
Very informative
Very interesting and quick.
Annoying as it would not allow me to out in correct order, quite enjoyed content
Not the easiest module
This one felt too vague to me. Obviously it is important to evaluate tools for their effectiveness at different processes, but there wasn't enough detail on how to do this. Or what tools we should be evaluating/ when!
Model tasks at a comfortable pace will allow students to get the ideas to progress and do it for themselves.
good course
Finally got the badge
A useful outline for helping students evaluate whether a specific tool would be suited to a particular project. If so, why is it the right tool and how will it help achieve your project's goals.
I learnt a lot from this module and found it very informative.
This was more difficult. I'm not sure I am able to apply this idea to my classes yet.
Similar to Explain, demonstrate, imitate/mirror and practice.
Good module , many thanks .
Modelling ideas and evaluation techniques for metacognition skills.
A good module.
Did not really relate to this module. I'm not sure that I use a huge range of software in my courses to consider selection in such a way.
Evaluation is SO important!
Clear and instructional module for passing our skills of selecting the right tool for the job, onto our learners. Emphasis not just on learning but on how to problem solve and make own choices.
It is important to develop these skills along with the skills to enable our learners to be digitally competent at work and home.
Nice, simple interactive module to introduce the concepts of metacognitive skills.
The video was good but the options in the quiz were not easy to work out.
Good interesting module
Clear presentation, with process of learning clearly defined
Some interesting elements, but very basic. The assessment statements are not really clear, and a bit ambiguous
Easy to follow an d use as a refresher if you are new to this type of activity
Powerful idea that choosing the right tool "It develops a learner’s understanding of the mechanics of problem-solving, finding strategies that will work for a range of problems they might encounter in the future.

I do not wish to provide feedback at this time. Thank you very much indeed.
Nothing learnt by myself in this module. Been doing this for 25 years in engineering colleges.
good plan to follow and it makes sense
Another helpful presentation. Clear guidance given.
How to choose the best tools for the task.
The presupposition of modelling metacognition and transferring ownership to the learners is very good but I think this module needed to start with fewer assumptions about the confidence of technophobic teachers to do this.
I think a lot of staff need training on how to evaluate different digital tools. There's a useful appraisal tool for this purpose on page 13 of the Future Teacher session on Getting Savvy with digital tools and resources - https://learningapps.co.uk/futureteacher/play_105#page13
The "Download transcript" link doesn't work - merely opens same web page again. The transcript can only be downloaded from Resources section.
Informative
Choosing the right tool is important and dependent on class personalities and ability etc.
Choosing the best tool is often the only one available
