EdTech: New forms and formats for face-to-face teaching and learning
This module is the first of a pair, with the New forms and formats for Blended Learning module following on.
This module looks at how changes in pedagogical thinking and our understanding of learning give the opportunity to renew the way we use technology in face-to-face learning.
Aim
How to develop new forms and formats of face-to-face teaching.
Objective
After completing this module, you will be able to:
- Use digital technologies to support innovative teaching strategies
- Lead the development of new forms and formats for face-to-face teaching and learning
Digital Teaching Professional Framework
This module covers the EdTech component - B2 : Teaching context: face-to-face
- Use learning environment technologies to support teaching, e.g. electronic whiteboards, mobile devices.
- Structure sessions so that different (practitioner-led and learner-led) digital activities jointly reinforce the learning objective.
- Structure and manage content, collaboration and interaction in a digital environment.
- Consider how practitioner-led digital interventions can best support the learning objective.
- Reflect on the effectiveness and appropriateness of the digital teaching strategies chosen and flexibly adjust methods and strategies.
- Experiment with and develop new formats and teaching methods (e.g. flipped classroom).

Taking note of your feedback
We greatly appreciate the time taken to provide us with feedback on each module. We regularly review all the feedback provided and use it to inform the development of new modules. Subject to funds being available and other constraints, we will amend existing modules where feedback shows this is required.Feedback from other members about this module
Lots to think about, good module
A new pedagogical way of thinking about teaching. Audrey's mantra makes you think of the relevance of what you're teaching.
good course
not an easy module
Interesting ideas.
Harder module but worthwhile, many thanks .
i feel more explanation could have been given on this one, at times i was confused
Like this one for reinforcing starting points for differentiATED LEARNING
Enjoyed this! Revisiting the lexis!
Another great model to consider when using technology to help with learning. It has enabled me to reflect on my practice and where the major challenges lie.
Interesting module- I think the three elements of load are often overlooked. There always seems to be more to teach is less time- but less is more. By cutting back the content and layering and revisiting really helps with retention.
fun exercise to distinguish between intrinsic, extraneous, germane
I do not wish to provide feedback at this time. Thank you very much indeed.
Poor as I failed the test twice. This shows that I had not understood the content.
This was really helpful in understanding the different types of learning.
Good information but i needed to listen twice to understand it fully
Awareness of cognition research is vital in teaching and it's great to see recommendations based on this. However, "cognitive overload and the volume of content" are often dictated by the demands of the awarding body and the syllabus. The biggest constraint is getting through the content in time so this approach can really only work if flipped learning is embedded alongside the explicit recognition that the content has to be covered by the students themselves outside the sessions and the application will be covered in face to face time. If learners rely on teachers to transmit all the content as well as help them understand it and apply it then , this kind of learning is well nigh impossible.
I think you could go into more detail to properly explain what you mean by intrinsic, germane, and extraneous
Interesting concepts
Interesting
It uses all elements and ensures teaching sessions have a mixed bag of delivery.
some really useful tips and materials here to alter face to face , whenever that recommences.
Useful concept of learning modules
Really impressed by this module!
Rethinking pedagogy to embed new technologies can make such a difference. I thought the activity reinforced well the three types of cognitive load that we should consider when restructuring TLA. I also agree that technologies are the ideal tools to support effective spaced learning, and as practitioners, we should definitely utilise them more systematically. I thought this module was well structured and illustrated with clear examples. Finally, the "Further Resources" are also well worth visiting!
I found this less interesting and less part of my role
Much appreciated - thoughtful and packs a lot into a small amount of time!
Good
good to learn about intrinsic, germaine and extraneous!
I need to revisit current HCSW Apprenticeship Standards PP that I have set up ready for delivery end of July 2020- need to look at content currently
Interesting
I really enjoyed this module. It provides useful vocabulary to evaluate our planning and delivery. The links to further resources are really helpful. It is also short, and to the point - effectively mirroring what it has to say about cognitive load.
Looking at teaching too forensically. If further resources point to the TES and Ofsted then that's a negative for me. That said, a check list or lesson plan format that encourages the application of these principles might make it more user friendly
really good information on helping lessons become more effective
Really helpful
Good info and user friendly.
Thanks - lots to think about
Covers a lot of ground in a surprisingly short amount of time - very good introduction to planning for embedding cognitive strategies.
This is a very interesting module.
Surprisingly the module concepts are alined with mine. That is definitely a bonus.
Good video.
