EdTech: Managing learner progress and performance
It is difficult for teachers to maintain effective oversight of learning activity during remote online working. Records of learner logins can’t show if a learner was engaged in learning and making progress, or even physically present at a device.
Aim
Measure, monitor and manage learner progress and outcomes during remote working
Objective
After completing the module, you will be able to:
- Identify key stages and decision points in remote learning for the purposes of ensuring effective learning is taking place
- Implement practical strategies for managing learner performance and progress in remote learning
Digital Teaching Professional Framework
This module covers the EdTech component - E1c : Performance overview
- Use digital technology to grade and give feedback on electronically submitted assignments.
- Use assessment management systems to enhance the effectiveness of feedback provision.
- Use digital technologies to monitor learner progress and provide support when needed.
- Adapt teaching and assessment practices, based on the data generated by the digital technologies used.
- Provide personal feedback and offer differentiated support to learners, based on the data generated by the digital technologies used.
- Enable learners to evaluate and interpret the results of formative, summative, self- and peerassessments.
- Help learners to identify areas for improvement and to develop learning plans to address these areas.
- Use digital technologies to enable learners to remain updated on progress and make informed choices on future learning priorities, optional subjects or future studies.

Video effective but quiz questions are not logical - some options are confusing.
good logical info
Different links to Microsoft teams and google classroom very useful. Having transcript really helped.
This was very much an area of concern, i like the short sequential tasks set however, i can still identify the workload that is needed to set this up but i do like the idea of better monitoring of student engagement. However, in my area we do have question marks on authenticity and could not guarantee the work on a few students was there own and this still troubles me some but again with meetings and discussions through teams etc and networking with others for support i think is good way forward.
Useful module with some good examples provided.
Useful short and effective module
Definitely an issue - log ins do not prove progress in learning. A good approach to simplifying the learning cycle and evidence that could be used for tracking during remote or blended learning approaches.
A good module with some interesting points. However still not completely sure if this would show me the students logging on and then walking away?!
really useful ideas - like the idea of students recording their view/feedback of the lesson or topic and uploading this
Some good ideas in this module.
Online learning can be good as work uploaded is dated and I can type feedback instantly. It's all kept on record.
interesting course
I do not agree with one of your answers; just because a student logs on during remote learning doesn't mean they are engaging; last year I had students logged on, but when it came to answering a question I directed at them, they gave no answer as they were doing some teaching with their child.
Very true
This module indicates what alternative methods there are to ensure that student progress is monitored effectively when learning on line and student engagement, motivation and focus is maintained consistently through the course.
very helpful
Follow-ups are essential to on-line sessions.
Excellent module , thank you.
Good
Quick, easy and specific information! Cheers
This video, clearly shows how interaction with your learners whilst working remotely is vital to monitor the progress being made throughout the session. Introducing other professional as mentioned in the video, needs proper introduction. A learner may not be open to support if this is just thrown upon them like this video suggests. Quizzes are a nice tool to monitor progress of learning, however, some learners may already have an understanding of the subject.
A good reminder of how important engagement not attendance is especially in remote learning.
Enjoyed and helped me realise that I am doing the right thing
This was a good module and one that has made we reflect on what we currently offer. We still look to deliver 1-2hr synchronous sessions to learners whereas we should maybe do little and often to increase engagement and support the learners. Tutors will then have more coaching conversations rather than specific Teaching in these sessions.
intersting to see what i am already doing
Good Module about Managing learner progress and performance
Great little bite on teaching online.
Interesting content, but more detailed examples would be useful too.
Interesting
The case study explained effectively how to manage learner progress and performance.
Great tips for providing smaller bite sized evidence gathering. My question would be whether all skills and knowledge can be broken down in such a way. There are certain topics or skills where more focused or in depth considerations require learners to do more challenging things over a longer period. Would have been good to acknowledge or address this.
Some helpful ideas for monitoring progress
The monitoring should be an expected part of the role as lecturer, this unit identified some of the ways that I can manage this more effectively.
great
Thank you. Short and to the point. I will share with my teaching team.
Great links as monitoring of engagement is a crucial areas of development for our team.
I liked the guidance on ways to measure learners' performance and progress as well as how best to support and
promote learners’ welfare. The framework shared is also very supportive.
